Lynchburg 9, Denison 6

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the game and held on to defeat Denison University 9-6 Saturday in a second round game in the 2005 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The Hornets will travel to Roanoke College Wednesday for a quarterfinal match-up.

Senior attack Billy McCulloch (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) scored twice as the Hornets opened a 4-0 lead with 7:50 still remaining in the first period. Denison chipped away with two scores before the end of the period and LC had a 4-2 lead after one. Four different players found the back of the net as LC scored the game's next four times to open an 8-2 advantage early in the third period. The Hornets led 9-3 midway in the fourth stanza before the Big Red rallied to score the games last three goals, but the Hornets held on for the NCAA Tournament win in program history.

Billy McCulloch had two goals and one assist and freshman Johnny Black (Timonium, MD/St. Paul's) netted two scores. Ryan Cranston (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) posted a goal and three assists, while Brian McCulloch (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) and Brian Kemper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) each had a goal and an assist. Adam Gift (Centreville, VA/Westfield) and Stephen Weis (St. Louis, MO/Christian Brothers) had a goal each, and freshman goalie Garrett Curran (Hull, MA/Tabor Academy) made 16 saves in net.

Jordan Kilbury scored twice for Denison (9-4). Chris Boehl, Yianni Savoulidis, Chris Chandler and Ted Douglass each had one goal and Alex Baruch made 10 stops. Denison out shot LC 42-34, but the big Red went 0-5 in extra-man opportunities. LC won 10 of the games 19 face-off opportunities.

Lynchburg (13-4) advances to face Roanoke College Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Salem, VA, with the winner advancing to the Final Four. The Hornets defeated the Maroons 11-10 on May 1 to capture the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title.
