PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse program has announced its 2009 schedule. The 13-game slate features six home games at Franklin Field and includes three teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Championship.

"I am very excited for the upcoming season," said head coach Brian Voelker, who enters his seventh season with the Quakers. "I have always believed in playing tough out-of-conference opponents, and once again we have put together a very challenging schedule. Our team will be tested every week, but I feel confident we are up to the task."

Following scrimmages at Fairfield (Feb. 7) and home against Stony Brook (Feb. 14), the Quakers are on the road but staying local for their first two games of the season, on consecutive weekend trips to Drexel (Feb. 22) and Villanova (Feb. 28). One week after seeing the Wildcats, Penn is home for the first time when 2008 NCAA participant Denver comes to town (March 6).

The Quakers then knock out the Ivy League portion of their schedule, playing six of their next seven games against Ancient Eight opponents. The run starts March 14 at home with Yale, and continues the next two Saturdays with trips to Harvard and Cornell (last year's Ivy champion and an NCAA participant a year ago). The second half of Penn's Ivy ledger involves home games with Dartmouth (April 3) and Princeton (April 7), and ends with a trip to Rhode Island during which the Quakers will face Ivy foe Brown (April 11). During this run, Penn also faces a new Division 1 opponent on March 22-the day after playing Harvard-in Bryant University.

Penn finishes the 2009 campaign with three daunting non-conference tasks, as the Quakers host perennial power and 2008 NCAA participant Maryland (April 18) and Towson (April 26) before concluding the season with a trip to Army (May 2).

Penn enters the 2009 campaign looking to improve upon its 6-7 record from a year ago and earn its third NCAA Championship bid in six years. The Quakers went 3-3 in the Ivy League in 2008, defeating Yale, Harvard and Dartmouth; it marked the third-straight year and the fourth time in five seasons Penn has been .500 or better in the always-difficult Ivy League.
