Junior Craig Dowd (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), sophomore Rickey Mirabito (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) and sophomore Ryan Shuler (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored four points apiece as the No. 8 ranked Georgetown University men's lacrosse team toppled No. 3 Maryland, 13-10, in the Hoyas season opener at Ludwig Field Saturday afternoon.

It was the second time in the last three years the Hoyas beat the Terrapins in the season opener and was Georgetown's 15th win in a season opener in the last 20 years.

The Terrapins led 6-5 at the half, but the Hoyas scored five times in the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead and added three more goals in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Trailing after two quarters, junior Scott Kocis (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) tied the game just over a minute into the quarter. Maryland responded with a score from Jeff Reynolds to take a 7-6 lead, but the Hoyas scored four-straight goals and held a 10-7 lead after the third.

Mirabito, with an assist from junior Andrew Brancaccio (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), tied the game again at 7-all with 10:31 left in the third.

Senior Michael Shotwell (Fairfax, Va./St. Stephen's-St. Agnes) won the ensuing face-off and fed Shuler, who scored his third goal of the game with 9:25 to play, giving the Hoyas the lead for good at 8-7. Mirabito added his second goal of the quarter, on an assist from Dowd, with 6:36 left, extending the margin to 9-7. A goal from Brancaccio, his second of the game, with seven seconds in the third quarter, gave the Hoyas a 10-7 lead.

Georgetown extended its lead to five goals, 12-7, with two scores in the first six minutes of the final quarter. Sophomore Brett Weiss (Phoenix, Md./Boys' Latin) fed senior Dan D'Agnes (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) for a score at 11:04 to make it 11-7 and senior Todd Cochran (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) scored an unassisted goal with 9:42 to play, making it 12-7.

The Terrapins scored twice in a span of 40 seconds to make it 12-9, but Dowd fed Mirabito for the third of his three goals, giving the Hoyas a 13-9 lead with 3:29 to play.

Georgetown had taken a 2-0 lead in the first quarter after goals from Brancaccio and Shuler, but Maryland scored three-straight to take a 3-2 advantage. The Hoyas tied the game early in the second game on a score from Dowd, but a goal from Jeremy Sieverts gave the Terps a 4-3 lead. Shuler and senior Jake Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Landon) scored consecutive goals to give the Hoyas a 5-4 lead, but two goals in the final four minutes gave Maryland a 6-5 lead at the break.

Dowd and Mirabito scored three goals and had one assists for four points apiece, while Dowd added a goal and three assists for four points. Brancaccio finished with two goals and an assist, while Kocis added a goal and an assist. Shotwell won 9-of-15 face-offs and had five ground balls and junior Barney Ehrmann (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) added five ground balls.

Georgetown plays its second game of the season, again on the road, next Saturday, Feb. 28, visiting ECAC rival St. John's.
