The Syracuse men's lacrosse team is the consensus No. 1 team in the nation. The Orange edged out Duke to claim the top spot in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) preseason coaches poll and the NIKE/Inside Lacrosse preseason media rankings. Both polls were released on Monday, Feb. 1.
In the USILA poll, Syracuse earned 176 points and five first-place votes to the Blue Devils' 168 points and four first-place nods. The Orange garnered 11 first-place votes and 366 points to Duke's six first-place votes and 360 points in the media poll.
It marks the second straight season the Orange has started No. 1 in the coaches rankings. Syracuse was second behind Virginia in last year's NIKE/Inside Lacrosse preseason poll.
The top 10 in both 2010 preseason polls were virtually identical. Virginia, North Carolina, Johns Hopkins and Cornell occupied the three through six slots in both polls. Both polls also had Notre Dame and Hofstra listed ninth and 10th, respectively.
The only difference in the top 10 was where the coaches and media had Princeton and Maryland. The coaches had the Terps seventh and Princeton eighth. The media poll had the reverse with the Tigers No. 7 and Maryland No. 8.
Syracuse begins the 2010 campaign on Sunday, Feb. 7 with its first preseason scrimmage versus Hofstra and Le Moyne. The Orange opens the regular season at home on Feb. 19 against Denver.
