CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Thirteen different players scored at least one goal as top-ranked SUNY Cortland defeated Western New England 16-5 in nonconference action Thursday at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 9-0 with the win, while the Golden Bears fell to 5-5.

Freshman Zach Hopps led the Cortland offense with six points on two goals and four assists. Junior Cody Consul tallied two goals and one assist, junior Joe Slavik scored twice, sophomores Matt Rakoczy and Benjamin Dunlavey each contributed one goal and one assist and eight others netted one goal apiece.

Senior Mike Kaminski started in goal, making eight saves through three quarters. Junior Steve Mahle played the fourth quarter and stopped four shots. Freshman Pat Baldwin won 9 of 15 faceoffs and collected a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore Billy Davis won 4 of 5 faceoffs. Senior Craig Sullivan and juniors Doug Meehan and J.T. Foltz each registered four ground balls.

Junior Adam Knapton paced Western New England with two goals. Junior Sean Lawton recorded one goal and one assist, seniors Nick Jez and Ryan Marcus each tallied a goal and junior Justin McKinney had one assist. Sophomore goalie Brandon Body stopped 11 shots and junior Jack Liacos collected a game-high 10 ground balls.

The Red Dragons took control of the game early, grabbing a 5-0 lead after the first quarter as five different players found the back of the net with Hopps assisting on three of the scores. Cortland made it an 11-1 game at the half as Hopps added two goals and another assist during the second quarter.

Consul and Marcus traded goals in the third quarter to make it 12-2, before both teams went deep into their benches in the final quarter with Cortland out scoring the Golden Bears 4-3 during the final 15 minutes for the 16-5 final.
