Mills scores seven goals, Kean jumps out to big lead and holds on to beat Drew
MADISON, N.J. -- Kean scored eight of the first nine goals of the game and held on to defeat Drew 15-13 on Monday. Senior Brad Mills scored seven goals on seven shots to lead all players.
The Cougars (11-1) raced out to a big advantage early on as Mills scored three goals in the first quarter alone, and Richard Cheifitz and Ryan Buerkle added one each for a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
John Marcelli and Sean Bobal expanded the Kean lead even more to start the second quarter, but Drew scored the next three and cut the gap to four. Mills scored two more before the break and Drew added one so that the score was 10-5 at halftime.
In the second half, the Rangers (2-7) desperately tried to claw their way back in the game; they outshot Kean 22-14 but could not catch the Cougars despite scoring the final three goals of the game.
Cheifitz finished with a hat trick, Bobal scored two -- including the game-winner -- and Marcelli and Matt Speciale added two scores for Kean.
Eric Tripp had a career-high six points and four ground balls to help facilitate the Rangers' attack. He recorded a hat trick for the first time this season and also chipped in a pair of assists. Patrick Lamon also lit up the back of the cage three times and dished off two assists.
Goalkeepers Dino Vitale (Kean) and Andrew Goldberg (Drew) each made 10 saves.
