Dowling jumps out to big lead, beats District of Columbia

WASHINGTON -- Dowling scored eight goals in the first quarter of a 21-8 win against the District of Columbia on Sunday. The Golden Lions won their fourth consecutive game to improve to 9-2 on the season, 4-0 in East Coast Conference play. The Firebirds dropped to 3-6 overall, 2-4 in the ECC.

Senior Billy Richardson and sophomore Brian White each finished with four goals and one assist in the game for Dowling. Richardson and senior Matt Crough both had two goals apiece by the end of the first quarter as the Golden Lions held an 8-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Dowling went on to lead 15-3 at halftime and 18-6 after three quarters. The Golden Lions outshot the Firebirds 39-16 in the first half and 55-35 for the game.

Crough and senior Kevin McElhone each found the back of the net four times. Five additional Golden Lions provided single goals with freshman Chris Stemke dishing off two assists.

Sophomore Michael Fitzpatrick scored one goal, went 18-for-23 on face-offs, and scooped up 10 ground balls. Holding up the back line was Frank Iaconetti, who finished with four ground balls. Seniors Sheldon Burns, Derek Muzio and Tim Canevari all recorded three ground balls apiece.

Dowling goalkeeper Frank Sommers spent all 60 minutes in the net making eight saves with two ground balls.

UDC's Luke Gillespie had a team-high four goals while scooping up four ground balls.
