BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Wheaton (Mass.) sophomore Brian Teague netted the game-winning goal at 3:17 in the second overtime to lift the Lyons past Massachusetts-Maritime 8-7 on Wednesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play
Wheaton freshman Will Morrison recorded a career-best four tallies, while classmate Devin Higgins scored two goals. Sophomore Kyle Rumberger matched Teague with one marker.
Massachusetts Maritime freshman Sam Jarvis led the Buccaneers with three points on two goals and one helper, while classmate Ryan McNeil scored two goals.
Wheaton senior Harrison Bramhall turned away eight shots and earned his fourth win between the pipes. Massachusetts-Maritime senior Paul Painten and freshman Keison Cunningham combined for 16 stops.
Rumberger netted the game's first goal at 11:30 in the opening stanza before the Buccaneers used a 5-0 run spanning the first and second quarter to secure a 5-2 lead at the break.
Morrison jumpstarted Wheaton's comeback with an unassisted strike at 8:26 in the third quarter, which initiated a 4-0 run that provided the Lyons with a 6-5 advantage heading into the final session. The Buccaneers responded with back-to-back tallies by sophomores Sean Staples and Anthony Kurylak to give the hosts a 7-6 differential with 8:17 remaining.
The Lyons once again turned to Morrison, who netted his fourth and final tally with 5:18 remaining that evened the score at 7-7 and forced the first of two extra sessions.
Wheaton collected a game-high 42 ground balls and converted 16 of 20 clears. Massachusetts Maritime scooped up 28 ground balls and went 18 for 22 on clear attempts. The Lyons won 12 of 20 face-offs, highlighted by freshman Kyle Neale, who won a career-high 10 face-offs. The Buccaneers won eight face-offs and scored one man-up goal. Wheaton recorded three goals with an extra attacker and outshot the Buccaneers 40-25.
