Scroggs named Secretary-Rules Editor for men’s lacrosse

Willie Scroggs, a former three-time NCAA men’s lacrosse championship coach, was approved as the new secretary-rules editor for the sport by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Wednesday.

Scroggs, who won national titles with North Carolina in 1981, '82 and '86, will succeed Don Zimmerman, the head coach at UMBC, in the position as secretary-rules editor, which is an eight-year term.

This appointment is fitting for Scroggs, who, besides being head coach at North Carolina, is also a former chair of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee and the Division I Men’s Lacrosse Committee.

“My interest in this position is sincere,” Scroggs said , whose wife, Karen Shelton, has won six national championships guiding the North Carolina field hockey team. “I am soon to be retired formally from North Carolina from my position of associate athletics director. This is a way for me to keep my involvement for lacrosse at a great level.”

After 12 seasons, Scroggs retired from coaching in 1990 when he and his wife began a family.

“I had been a full-time coach for 21 years in high school, as a college assistant and college head coach,” Scroggs said, who played football and lacrosse during his student-athlete days at Johns Hopkins. “There was also a chance to take more responsibility administratively at North Carolina. I felt our lacrosse program was on solid ground. It was a good time for me to devote my time to administrative duties and to be more available as a husband and be supportive to my wife.”

His most recent position at North Carolina was associate athletics director of facilities and operations.
