Third-quarter surge lifts UNC past Denver

Fourth-ranked North Carolina scored five goals in a span of 2:52 early in the third quarter to take the lead for good in defeating top-ranked Denver 12-10 at Navy Field Friday night. The win improved UNC to 5-0 on the season while the Pioneers fell to 3-1.

With the game moved to Navy Field due to this week's snowstorm, a crowd of 1,722 braved the elements.

Chad Tutton had a hat trick for the Tar Heels while Peyton Klawinski and Luke Goldstock each scored a pair of goals. Jimmy Bitter came up huge for the Tar Heels with a goal and four assists. Denver's Wesley Berg had three goals and Connor Cannizzaro had two goals and two assists.

Carolina outshot the Pioneers 57-35. The teams were even in face-offs at 12-12 and UNC had a slight edge in ground balls 30-26. UNC took great care of the ball, committing only seven turnovers, including only two in the last three quarters of the game.
