Dartmouth 13, Georgetown 3

May 15, 2005

HANOVER, N.H. Senior Katieanne Christian scored five goals for the second consecutive game to lead the fourth-seeded Dartmouth women's lacrosse team to a convincing 13-3 victory over fifth-seeded Georgetown (13-5) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament on Sunday afternoon at Scully-Fahey field. With the win, the Big Green improves to 16-2 on the season and advances to the NCAA semifinals next weekend in Annapolis, Maryland, where it will face top-seeded Northwestern.

"Georgetown's a really good team. We picked a good day to play our best game of the year so far," said Dartmouth coach Amy Patton. "What we practiced, they executed 100 percent. Everybody played well."

The three Hoya goals is the fewest Dartmouth has allowed an opponent in an NCAA tournament game, easily better than the six goals the Big Green surrendered to Princeton in last year's quarterfinals. It also the fewest goals Georgetown has ever scored in the NCAA tournament and the fewest goals the Hoyas have scored this season.

The Big Green got off to a slow start and didn't get on the board for more than 10 minutes until Christian (Agawam, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal at 19:42.

"We were a little tentative with our passes in the first 10 minutes, but we gained momentum throughout the game," explained Patton.

The staunch Dartmouth defense, led by junior Devon Wills (Denver, Colo.) kept the Hoyas at bay, allowing the Big Green attack to get going. After Christian's goal, Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Annie Leibovitz (Boulder, Colo.) and Margo Duke (Englewood, Colo.) scored to give Dartmouth a 4-0 cushion.

"Our defense started us," added Patton. "Our attack was firing and we were getting good shots, but our defense jump started us."

Georgetown Lauryn Bernier broke up the shutout with a goal off a free position shot at 5:09, but Christian answered with 23 seconds left in the half. As she was falling down, she managed to get off a shot and her low screamer found the left corner. Another Christian tally with seven seconds left in the period gave the Big Green a comfortable 6-1 halftime advantage. Dartmouth fired off 17 shots in the half to just seven for Georgetown.

Christian began the second half in the same fashion she concluded the first. Her fourth and fifth goals of the game came in the first nine minutes of the period and gave Dartmouth an 8-1 lead. Goals by Leibovitz, her second of the game, and freshman Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) followed before the Hoyas' Sarah Oliphant tallied with 18:16 left. Szefi scored the second of her three goals less than a minute later off a feed from sophomore Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) and then Douthett tallied to make it a 12-2 game. Szefi closed out the Dartmouth scoring with 6:17 left and the Hoyas' Coco Stanwick registered an unassisted tally for Georgetown with 1:40 left.

Wills finished with seven saves for Dartmouth while Georgetown's Sarah Robinson had nine stops, all in the first half. Maggie Koch replaced Robinson in the cage with 17:06 left and registered three saves.

"I'm so happy to move on and have the opportunity to continue," said senior co-captain Sarah Sanborn (Owings Mills, Md.). "It was a total team effort. We're in it together and the sky's the limit."
