LEWISBURG, Pa. – Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tallied three goals and two assists and Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) also scored three times each to lead the Bucknell women’s lacrosse team to a 14-5 victory over Wagner in the season opener for both teams Thursday at frigid Graham Field.

The game started in a snow squall, with winds gusting up to nearly 40 miles per hour making the temperatures in the upper 20s feel like the low teens. Both teams started slowly, taking long possessions to control the ball in the early going. Wagner jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Bison rallied to go up 4-3 at the half, then Bucknell turned it into a rout in the second half by outscoring the Seahawks 10-2 in the final 30 minutes.

Braun added an assist to her hat trick for a four-point afternoon, and she also had four ground balls and three draw controls in an all-around outstanding performance. Buechel was also strong from end line to end line. She took a game-high 10 shots, collected five draws and caused two turnovers while keying a transition game that converted 13 of 17 clearing chances in the tough conditions.

Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), Michelle Milot (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and freshman Ryan Gribbon (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) all tallied one goal and one assist, while freshman Jenna Lotkowictz (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) also registered her first collegiate goal.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) enjoyed one of the best games of her young career, finishing with 10 saves and only five goals against. The close defense unit of Catherine Barry (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), Kendall Thibeault (Fallston, Md./St. Paul’s) and Katie Fox (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) helped limit the Seahawks to only one second-half goal before yielding a meaningless score with two seconds left in the game.

Back-to-back goals by Braun gave the Bison a 4-2 lead with 3:21 left in the first half, but Carolyn Clark answered only 20 seconds after Braun’s second goal to make it a 4-3 game at the half.

Bucknell came out quickly in the second period, scoring only 30 seconds in when Peters bounced an 8-meter shot just under the crossbar. Donohue, Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) and Buechel tacked on goals in the first eight minutes of the half, and by the time Gribbon scored her first goal off a Braun assist at the 14:17 mark the Bison had a commanding 10-3 lead.

Bucknell outshot Wagner 38-21, including 22-8 in the second half. Bucknell had 17 ground balls to 11 for Wagner. Both teams were foul-prone, with the Seahawks whistled for 27 fouls compared to 25 for the Bison.

Kelly Blundin led Wagner with two goals, while Cara Gonzalez picked up a goal and an assist. Goalie Alex Johnston finished with 14 saves.

Bucknell will be back in action on Saturday at Davidson at 2 p.m.
