DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 2 Duke women’s lacrosse team is set to take on the fifth-ranked University of Maryland Terrapins this Saturday in the ACC opener for both squads. The game is set for noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md.
The game will be aired live on the web via ACC Select.
The Blue Devils are coming off a two-win weekend at home in which Duke bested both Richmond and William & Mary at Koskinen Stadium. The weekend moved the Blue Devils to 4-0 on the early season.
In the all-time series against the Terps, Maryland holds a slight 9-8 edge, although Duke has won two straight – both coming last year. Duke won a 14-13 nail-biter in Durham during the regular season before then edging the Terps again, 9-7, in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals at College Park.
Through four games in 2009, Duke has been led by Lindsay Gilbride and Carolyn Davis, both with 15 goals apiece. Sarah Bullard has eight goals while Caroline Cryer and freshman Kat Thomas each have netted seven. Thomas was named the Womenslax.com Rookie of the Week this week after she led the Blue Devils with four scores in the William & Mary game. Kim Imbesi has recorded 29 saves in net, while the Duke defense has allowed just 8.75 goals per game.
For the Terrapins, Caitlyn McFadden and Karri Ellen Johnson each have nine scores. A trio of keepers have shared time in the net for Maryland. The Terps are 2-0 on the season, having defeated Richmond in the 2009 opener and most recently downing UMass, 16-4.
After the Maryland tilt, the schedule remains difficult for Duke as it returns home to face No. 8 Princeton next Sat., March 7 at 12 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
