SAN DIEGO - No. 1 Northwestern's Shannon Smith scored six goals and added three assists as the Wildcats defeated the UMass women's lacrosse team 18-6 on Saturday night at Rancho Bernardo High School in front of 1,315 fans. The game was the highlight event of the WomensLax.com Surfside Lacrosse Cup which also included a weekend of club tournaments and clinics.

The five-time defending National Champion Wildcats (1-0) jumped out to a quick start going up 7-0 in the first 15:45 of play thanks to three goals from Smith. UMass' Jackie Lyons and Nina Sarcona tallied back-to-back goals in a 38-second span to cut the lead to 7-2.

Northwestern tacked on seven more goals to close out the half. UMass freshman Lauren Terracino tacked on a goal with 29 seconds to play before Northwestern's Alexandra Frank scored with 14 seconds to go giving the 14-3 halftime score.

In the second half, the Minutewomen (0-1) scored three more goals thanks to Merritt Cosgrove, Jesse O'Donnell and Ryan Gorman. For Cosgrove, the game was a home coming of sorts for the Carlsbad, Calif., native.

Katie Florence made 13 saves in goal for UMass taking the loss. Brianne LoManto was credited with three saves in 38:56 of work allowing three goals. Darby St. Clair-Barrie played the final 20:04 allowing three goals with no saves.

Smith set new career highs in goals, assists, and points for Northwestern in the rematch between last year's NCAA Tournament First Round meeting.

The Wildcats outshot UMass 37-to-14 for the game including 24-to-8 in the first half. Northwestern also led UMass in groundballs (21-to-11), draw controls (21-to-5), and held a slight edge in turnovers (13-to-15).

The Minutewomen return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when UMass hosts Holy Cross at McGuirk Stadium. The opening draw is set for 3 PM and admission is free to all.
