No. 6 Trinity (Conn.) tops Union
Leonhard scores five goals to lead Bantams to victory
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder Megan Leonhard tallied a game-high five goals to lead the Trinity (Conn.) to a 13-7 victory against Union on Sunday afternoon. No. 6-Trinity improve to 3-0, while the Dutchwomen drop to 0-2.
Trinity opened the game's scoring quickly in the first half as senior Caite Irvine tallied on a free position, while rookie Caroline Hayes made it a 2-0 advantage with 26:32 left to play. Union battled back minutes later as freshman Emily McGrail and junior Brittany Fraser each hammered in free position tallies to make it 2-2 at the 17:27 mark.
Irvine pulled the visitors ahead less than two minutes later for a 3-2 advantage and the Bantams pushed it to a three-goal lead at 5-2 with 9:25 left in the half. Union received tallies from junior Heather Fraser, senior Tory Arnold and McGrail to make it a 5-5 game. Trinity, which held a 17-7 shot advantage through the first 30 minutes, gained the upper hand with four minutes remaining as Hayes converted a shot from sophomore attacker Shea Kusiak for a 6-5 lead at halftime.
In the second half of action, the Bantams controlled the pace right from the start, scoring five consecutive goals to build an 11-5 advantage. Leading the charge was junior attacker Hadley Duncan, who recorded three tallies, including two back-to-back. Union cut it to 11-6 with 11:10 left to play as junior Tory Cameron connected off a pass from McGrail in front, but Leonhard cemented the Trinity victory late with a pair of goals.
In addition to Leonard, Duncan and Hayes added three goals each, while junior midfielder Haley Thompson had three assists for Trinity. In goal, Bantam junior Olivia Whitney improved to 3-0, stopping five shots. For Union, McGrail finished with three goals and an assist, while four others added a goal each. Between the pipes, freshman Kim Grinhaus made 10 saves to move to 0-1 on the season.
