ATLANTA (AP) -Georgia State football coach Bill Curry has taken on an additional role as interim athletic director.

The school announced Wednesday that Curry will run the athletic program while it seeks a permanent replacement for Mary McElroy, who was fired last month by outgoing president Carl Patton.

The school's new president, Mark Becker, plans to have McElroy's successor on board by the spring.

"I'm pleased that coach Curry is willing to serve in this crucial role at a very important time," Becker said. "His experience in college athletics and his dedication to Georgia State makes him the best person to take the helm of our program."

Curry was hired in June to launch a football program that will begin play in 2010.
