TOWSON, Md. -- Tim Leonard, formerly the senior associate athletic director for external affairs at Southern Methodist, was introduced as the new Towson director of athletics by school president Dr. Maravene Loeschke on Friday morning in the Minnegan Room of the Johnny Unitas Stadium Field House.

“I am so excited to be a Towson Tiger,” Leonard said. “We are so excited, my family and I, to be here. We think this is a great opportunity and it’s a great university. We are thrilled to be a part of it.”

Prior to coming to Towson, Leonard served as senior associate athletic director at SMU since 2008.  He also was the Mustangs’ interim director of athletics between May and August 2012.  Prior to coming to SMU, Leonard served in a series of increasingly responsible positions at Central Florida, including assistant vice president for athletics development and associate athletic director, assistant AD for development and assistant AD for external operations.

“Tim has extensive experience creating visions for athletics and then creating, inclusively, strategic plans to get them accomplished,” Loeschke said. “This is what we all unanimously saw in Tim: Experience across the spectrum of athletics, integrity, passion and energy. He has a devotion to students and their welfare on all levels. He has an unfailing commitment to excellence. He is a role model for all of us, particularly our student-athletes.”

“There are three important things that a leader can do: listen, learn and then lead,” Leonard said. “I want to really come in and understand the culture of the university and immerse myself with everything that has happened here. Then I can make wise, informed decisions. To me, it’s all about trying to get the resources necessary for our coaches and our student-athletes so that they can be successful. That’s what this is all about.”

Leonard is a member of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors and was the 2012 recipient of NAADD’s Athletic Fundraiser of the Year award.

Leonard’s athletics career also includes positions at Boise State, where he was assistant director of the Bronco Athletic Association, and at Illinois State, where he served as director of annual giving.

Leonard is a graduate of Boise State, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications. In addition to his affiliation with NAADD, he is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
