Texas A&M student-athletes donate to South Carolina flood relief

COLLEGE STATION, Texas— The Texas A&M Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with the support of Aggie student-athletes and the 12th Man sponsored the Aggies Can Food Drive and the sale of commemorative 12th Man towels this weekend. The $30,000 in proceeds from the sales of the 12th Man towels went to support the South Carolina flood relief fund.

The Aggies Can Food Drive, an annual fund raising event by Texas A&M student-athletes, collected over 9,500 pounds of food. This initiative will support the Brazos Valley Food Bank and the 12th Can, which is the campus food pantry. In addition to raising over 9,500 pounds of food, the SAAC collected $9,600 in donations to be distributed to the local agencies to help support eliminating hunger in the Brazos Valley.

"Our teams are successful competitively, but the real winners were the Brazos Valley Food Bank, the 12thCan and the good people of South Carolina who were devastated by the recent floods," Texas A&M SAAC President Kelli Benjamin, who is a former swimmer on the Aggies' nationally ranked squad, said. "We were able to collect 9,500 pounds of food along with an additional $39,632 in donations to help the local community. As a member of the SEC family,  we were able to pass along a check for $30,000 to the South Carolina flood relief fund."

"I am truly proud of the selfless service of our Aggie student-athletes and for the outstanding leadership provided by our Aggie SAAC," Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. "Our student-athletes really stood out in their lime green shirts at our recent athletic events. The 12th Man  is ready to help all of our athletics teams, and yet they really responded to help our local community and the communities affected by the flooding in South Carolina."
