SALISBURY, Md. -- The No. 3 ranked Salisbury men's soccer team defeated #2 ranked Johns Hopkins 1-0 in the first game of the four-team NCAA Division III soccer sectional today at the SU Athletics Complex.

The Sea Gulls (19-0-3) advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. sectional final (national quarterfinal round) to face Richard Stockton. RSC defeated Stevens Tech 2-1 in the day's second sectional semi-final. The Sea Gulls return to the NCAA's final eight for the second straight year and third time in team history.

Following a scoreless first half, Salisbury registered the game's only goal at 67:58 when junior Bill Whittington scored his 15th goal of the season on an assist from senior Markus Hunkeler.

Salisbury controlled the game throughout, holding a 14-5 advantage in total shots, including 8-2 in the second half. Junior Jason Cranford recorded one save in goal for the Sea Gulls while senior goalie Gary Kane Jr. recorded four saves for the Blue Jays.

Salisbury recorded its 10th shutout of the season and set a new school record for most wins in a season. The previous record of 18 victories was set in 1999.

Johns Hopkins finishes the season with a 17-1-2 record.
