Akron Stays Perfect with Win at Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Two early goals by No. 2 Akron proved to be too much for No. 20 Buffalo to overcome as the Zips (11-0-0, 2-0-0 MAC), posted a 3-0 Mid-American Conference victory over the Bulls (10-2-0, 0-1-0 MAC) Friday night, Oct. 7.
The Zips had an early chance five minutes in when UB goalkeeper Dan Bell bobbled a save and Matthew Tutich (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) got his foot on the ball, only to send it over the net.
Akron took a 1-0 lead at 11:33 on Ross McKenzie's (Whangamata, New Zealand/Mount Albert) 10th goal of the season. Jonathan McClain (Huber Heights, Ohio/Huber Heights/Wright St.) ran up the left side of the field and passed the ball into McKenzie in front of the net, who rolled it passed an outstretched Bell.
The Zips second score came just three minutes later as Buffalo was called for a foul just outside the top of the penalty box. On the restart, Yohann Mauger (Rennes, France/Marc Bloch/Int'l Business School of Rennes) touched the ball back to Sinisa Ubiparipovic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/UIC) who rocketed his shot off the top of the crossbar and into the net for the score at 14:15.
Buffalo's best chance to get on the board in the first half came with 5:40 left in the period. Braden Byler drew UA goalkeeper Evan Bush (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) out the net and fired a shot, only to be denied by defender Ossie Michalsen (Bergen, Norway/Soccer Academy of Danielsen) who scrambled to cover the open net.
McKenzie's crossing shot nine minutes into the second half ran wide, but he made up for it with his second goal of the night at 62:31. Coming off Ubiparipovic's corner kick, Matt Augustin (Akron, Ohio/Hoban) got his head on the ball, but UB keeper Bell punched the ball out, right at McKenzie who knocked in the score.
The Zips will face one of their biggest tests of the season as they travel to Jamaica, N.Y. Wednesday to face the third-ranked St. John's Red Storm. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
