Redlands 1, UC Santa Cruz 0

Nov. 9, 2005

The University of Redlands welcomed UC Santa Cruz to Farquhar Field on Wednesday for the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships. With intense play and solid defense from both teams, the Bulldogs held onto a 1-0 lead to take the victory and move onto the second round of the championships.

Despite opportunities for both teams to score, the game remained knotted in a tie after 45 minutes of play. Early in the second half, freshman Bryan Fakkema (Oak Harbor, WA) received a pass from freshman Alex Parker (San Diego, CA) on a breakaway and flicked it over the Banana Slug goalkeeper to score for the Bulldogs. This was Fakkema's 10th goal of the season and Parker's fifth assist.

Redlands turned away seven second-half shots by Santa Cruz to bring the Bulldogs' season total to 18 shutouts. The team counted on senior defender Silverio Martinez (Fontana, CA) to lead the backfield. In addition, Redlands' goalkeeper, Andrew Roraff (Highland, CA), provided five saves in the victory. On offense, Fakkema led the team with three shots while sophomore Kody Andrew (Montana City, MT) and senior Chad Holash (Sun City, CA) supplied two each.

The Bulldogs take to the road for the second round of the NCAA Championships as they face off against Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington, on Saturday, November 12, at 1 p.m.
