Nov. 19, 2005

Morgantown, W.Va. November 19, 2005 The most successful Robert Morris University mens soccer season since 1994 came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to West Virginia University in the first round of the NCAA College Cup. The Colonials finish the year with an 11-8-1 mark, their best record under ninth-year head coach Bill Denniston, and their third Northeast Conference championship.

West Virginia, meanwhile, improves to 13-7-2 and advances to the second round of College Cup action to meet #9 Akron on Tuesday, November 22. WVU had a season-high 28 shots in the game as they beat the Colonials for the second time this season.

The Mountaineers finally found the back of net on their 23rd shot of the game. Devon McTavish took a throw-in deep in RMU territory and received the ball back immediately from Dan Stratford. McTavish beat his defender to the corner and crossed the ball eight-yards out from net. Reed Cooper was on the receiving end, getting up and heading the ball into the left confer of the net at 72:05.

West Virginia controlled the majority of the first half and had three solid opportunities in the last nine minutes. Stratfords direct kick from 20-yards out started bending too late, catching the outside of the RMU net. The Mountaineers pressured again two minutes later, but Colonials freshman goalkeeper Matt Felice (Missisaugua, Ontario / Phillip Pocock) pushed aside McTavishs shot from just inside the penalty box.

Felice was up to the task just 90 seconds later, this time turning away Jarrod Smiths shot from the top of the 18-yard box.

Robert Morris best opportunity came with 30 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore Connor Curran-Hays (Camp Hill, Pa. / Camp Hill (Providence)) streaked in the left side of the box but his shot missed the goal on the near side.

Felice finished with eight saves, one shy of his career-best.
