No. 2 North Carolina Hands No. 18 N.C. State 2-1 Loss In ACC Opener
Sept. 13, 2009
Junior midfielder Michael Farfan scored the game-winner with 25:42 to play to lead second-ranked North Carolina to a 2-1 men's soccer win over No. 18 NC State Saturday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools.
The win lifts the Tar Heels to 3-0-1 overall, 1-0 in the ACC. NC State drops to 3-1, 0-1.
NC State scored first on a 18-yard chip shot by Alan Sanchez just 70 seconds into the match, which was played at UNC's Fetzer Field in front of a crowd of 4,200.
The Tar Heels evened the game on a penalty kick by Zach Loyd with 12:02 left in the first half. Carolina freshman Enzo Martinez, who set up the go-ahead goal, drew the foul when he dribbled into the penalty area, beat his defender and was taken down. Loyd drove his first attempt past State keeper Christopher Widman, but the referee whistled the ball dead and Loyd had to re-try the penalty. His second effort also found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Carolina took the lead for good as Martinez sent a long ball down the right sideline. Farfan took possession outside the box, beat a defender at the edge of the area, then blasted a shot that ricocheted off the right post for the goal. The goal was Farfan's team-leading third of the season.
NC State's best chance to tie the game came with 1:22 to play, but UNC goalie Brooks Haggerty made his second and final save of the night on a left-footed blast by Tyler Lassiter from 15 yards away.
The game had 43 fouls (22 NC State, 21 UNC) and five cautions (three NC State, two UNC). Carolina out-shot the Pack, 9-5, and had four of the game's five corners.
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday, Sept. 18, when they play host to Duke at 7 p.m.
