The Hobart College soccer team moved up to No. 4 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s (NSCAA) coaches poll. The Statesmen, previously ranked 10th, defeated Utica 2-0 and Brockport 2-0 last week to improve their undefeated record to 4-0-0. Hobart is now the top-ranked team in the East Region as well.

Through four matches, nine different players have scored for Hobart. Sophomore Tommy Hayes leads the pack with two goals and three assists, while classmate Michael Moulton is close behind with two goals and one helper.

First-years Will Abbott, Reuben Burk, and Alex Kittelberger all recorded their first collegiate tallies last week. Abbott set up Burk’s game-winning goal in the Statesmen’s win over the Pioneers, then netted a goal of his own later in the game, while Kittelberger scored an insurance tally in the 88th minute vs. the Golden Eagles. Abbott was named the Liberty League’s Co-Rookie of the Week for his efforts.

A stingy Hobart defense has allowed the offense to flourish. Through the first four contests, the Statesmen have allowed just one goal, and just 11 shots on goal. Last week, Hobart held Utica and Brockport to just two shots on goal combined. Sophomore goalie Charlie Hale has posted solid numbers thus far. He owns a 0.25 goals against average, a .909 save percentage, and three shutouts.

The Statesmen, also ranked eighth in the poll, will be back in action today, Sept. 15, when they host St. John Fisher for a non-league game at 4:30 p.m. Fans unable to make it to Cozzens Field can listen to the game live on WHWS-FM (105.7), or follow along online with live stats at
