No. 4 Cal Falls To New Mexico In Stanford Nike Classic

STANFORD, Calif. - Fourth-ranked California lost to New Mexico, 2-1, in the first game of the Stanford Nike Classic on Friday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Junior midfielder Servando Carrasco scored the Golden Bears' lone goal in the 41st minute. Cal's record now stands at 5-2-0 after the non-conference match. New Mexico's record improved to 5-2-0.
New Mexico opened the scoring when Stephen Brown crossed to James Urbany, who scored in the 21st minute to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead.
Junior defender Josh Leon assisted on Cal's goal, as his throw in found Carrasco, who headed in his first goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. The teams stayed tied at halftime.
Cal outshot New Mexico, 10-6, in the first half, but only three of those Cal shots were on goal. Lobos goalkeeper Justin Fite made two saves in the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore goalie David Bingham made one save but was replaced in goal at the 30:02 mark by freshman teammate Robby Gogatz, who played the rest of the game. Gogatz made three saves in just his second appearance of the season
The Lobos recorded the winning goal in the 89th minute, when Justin Davis' corner kick reached Ryan Farquharson, who scored past Gogatz.
Junior defender A.J. Soares took Cal's last shot 17 seconds from the end of the game, but a New Mexico player blocked the Bears' last-ditch effort.
New Mexico outshot Cal for the game, 15-14.
Cal plays its final game of the Stanford Nike Classic when it hosts Air Force at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. Air Force plays Stanford at 7 p.m. on Friday.
