GENEVA, N.Y.--The sixth-ranked Hobart College soccer team fell to 14th-ranked Rensselaer 3-1 this afternoon in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen suffer their first loss of the season, slipping to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference, while the Engineers remain unbeaten with a 7-0-1 overall record and a 2-0-0 Liberty League mark.

Rensselaer's Blake Adams (Seton Hall Prep/Cedar Grove, N.J.) scored twice to lead the visitors. His first tally came on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, after he was tripped up in the box. Adams' shot to the right corner of the goal got past Hobart sophomore goalie Charlie Hale (Winchester/Winchester, Mass.).

The Engineers put another point on the board seconds before the halftime break. In the 45th minute, Julian Coy (Brentsville District/Bristow, Va.) took a shot that was blocked by the Statesmen defense. Coy then recovered the ball and freed himself long enough to take an 18-yard shot that Hale deflected, but had enough pace to find the back of the net.

Adams gave RPI a convincing 3-0 lead at the 78 minute, 32 second mark, thanks to a cross from Bryce Hutchinson (Twin Valley/Elverson, Pa.).

Less than a minute later, Hobart got on the board. After a corner kick by sophomore Michael Moulton (Providence Country Day/Coventry, R.I.), sophomore Tommy Hayes (St. Anthony's/East Northport, N.Y.) headed the ball high into the air in front of the goal. As the ball was coming down, Rensselaer goalie Alex Penny (Northport/Northport, N.Y.) tried to punch it out, but ended up knocking it into the goal. The tally is the first Penny has allowed all season.

The Statesmen had a handful of chances to score throughout the contest. Two of the best opportunities came in the 71st and 75th minutes. At 70:23, Moulton found himself open near the top left corner of the box, but his shot on what appeared to be an open net was stopped by a diving Penny. Later, at 74:17, it was Hayes with a wide open look at the goal, but his shot narrowly missed wide left.

The Engineers held a slight 16-13 edge in shots, while Hobart owned an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Both Hale and Penny finished with six saves.

Hobart will be back in action on Sept. 29, when the Statesmen host Medaille for a non-league match at 4:30 p.m.
