ADA, Ohio -
Junior Joe Marino (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) made a diving save in the third round of the penalty kicks to lead The College at Brockport Men’s Soccer team to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as the Golden Eagles played to a 1-1 tie with Ohio Northern University through regulation time and two overtime periods. In the first round of five penalty kicks, Brockport scored on all five attempts for a 5-3 victory.

Brockport (10-5-4) advances to a second-round matchup against Messiah College (19-1-0) at 1 pm Sunday at Messiah College in Grantham, PA.

Against Ohio Northern, the teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half and senior Brad Lefort (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) stole a ball from an Ohio Northern defender in the 18-yard box and beat the Polar Bears goalie to give Brockport a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the second half.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Ohio Northern scored after Marino had made the save on an initial shot, the Polar Bears picked up the rebound and score to tie the game.

After a 1-1 tie in regulation, the teams played two scoreless overtime periods. Brockport applied pressure in the closing minutes with four consecutive corner kicks.

Brockport had goals in the penalty kicks by Steve Abgarian (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-JFK), Lefort, Christian Tychostup (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield), Mike Breman (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-JFK), and freshman Adam Rowell (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) who scored on the fifth – and deciding penalty kick.

Ohio Northern scored on its first two kicks before Marino made a diving save to his right on the third attempt to give Brockport a 3-2 advantage in the kicks. The Polar Bears scored on their fourth shot but since Brockport scored for the two-goal advantage on its fifth attempt to clinch the victory, Ohio Northern did not attempt its fifth shot.

The overtime tie gives Brockport a 1-0-4 record in overtime games this season with the Golden Eagles winning two penalty kick shootouts.

The trip to the NCAA Tournament will be the second in the last four years as Brockport earned an at large bid in 2005 and defeated Nazareth College in its first round game before losing in the second round to SUNY Plattsburgh.

The Golden Eagles have made 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament and won the National Championship in 1974. Brockport advanced to the championship game in the tournament two other years in 1975 and 1976.
