Durango, CO. - The Fort Lewis College Men's Soccer team have once again proven why they are the #1 team in the Nation. The Skyhawks defeated the (#3) Buffs of West Texas A&M 3-1 in front of a loud and lively crowd earlier today in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Divison II playoffs. Fort Lewis will advance to the quarterfinals next week with an astonishing record of 21-1-0 overall.

The first twenty minutes of the game was very equal with both teams figuring out how to play on the wet and muddy pitch. Fort Lewis was able to figure it out first in the 24th minute when the Buffs attempted to clear the ball but it bounced to the top of the box where senior captain Jeff Jennings fired a low rocket past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Both teams had their chances in the first half with FLC putting up 6 shots in the first half and the Buffs recording 4, however the score remained at 1-0 in favor of the Skyhawks.

Fort Lewis came out very confident after the break and knocked in two more goals early in the second half. In the 56th minute Jennings centered the ball from the right side of the field. The ball sailed over everyone and found the head of Thomas Hoang who was on the backside of the goal for the easy header and game winning goal and 2-1 lead. Less than a minute later Hoang passed the ball into the box past a few Buff defenders when Joe Barnd made a run on the ball. As the keeper came out Barnd punched the ball into the top of the net for the 3-0 lead.

The game was looking out of reach for West Texas but in the 81st minute Ben Everson of the Buffs was able to control a ball inside the box and lay a shot past Zane Wells into the upper right for their lone goal of the game. Fort Lewis was able to maintain possession and hold off the Buffs for the victory.

West Texas A&M finished the game with eight shots. Sebastian Furness recorded 2 saves in the loss. The Buffs end their season with an overall record of 15-2-2.

Fort Lewis tallied 17 shots in the match. Barnd and Euan Purcell each recorded 4 shots. Purcell earned the win with three great saves.
