DUBUQUE, Iowa - Brian Sherpe made two key second half saves to help Whitworth University hold on for a 1-0 win over Hardin-Simmons University and advance to the section final round of the 2009 men's NCAA Division III soccer tournament.

The 15th-ranked Pirates will take on No. 5 Dominican University (Ill.) at 6:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday at the Loras College Rock Bowl.

The lone score came on an own-goal in the 64th minute. Cameron Bushey lofted a free kick deep into the HSU box and a Cowboy defender headed the ball just inside his own post as he was trying to clear the ball.

Whitworth then withstood the HSU pressure over the final 25 minutes of the match.

The Cowboys' best chance to score came in the 79th minute when Sherpe dove to save an attempt by Estevan Arbaiza.

HSU had a 13-7 edge in total shots, but shots on goal were equal at 3-3. Sherpe finished with three total saves for his 10th shutout of the season and second of the NCAA tournament.

Whitworth has advanced to the round of eight for the second time in school history. The last time the Pirates got this far, they defeated Trinity (Texas) 2-1 to advance to their first final four in 2005.

Whitworth is now 9-4-2 all-time in NCAA tournament matches.

Dominican defeated host Loras College 1-0 in overtime in the day's first match. Andy Lynch headed in a corner kick with 30 seconds to go in the first overtime period.

Whitworth will be playing Dominican for the first time.
