November 22, 2009. Durango, CO – The #1 Fort Lewis Men’s soccer team (22-1-0) is headed to Tampa, FL for the NCAA Division II Final Four National Tournament to try to reclaim the national title for the programs second time ever. The Skyhawks defeated #15 Cal. St. Dominguez Hills (18-6-1) this afternoon on Dirks Field in the Quarterfinal game 1-0.

In front of 1600 rowdy fans, the Skyhawks put quite a show on for their supporters. From a spectacular goal to a saved penalty kick the fans got what they paid for.

After going scoreless in the first half, Fort Lewis lit up the scoreboard in the second half when senior Euan Purcell received a through ball from teammate Tom Settle , who was then able to beat a couple defenders and fire a shot past Toros goalkeeper Markus Dickerson for his 19th goal of the season. Settle earned his 21st assist of the season which ranks him 1st in Division II in assists.

The Toros had a few chances to capitalize but the Skyhawks refused to go down without a fight playing extremely tough defense.

After a Toro player was taken down in the box in the second half, Kevin Gallaugher had a chance to put his team on the scoreboard. As he stepped up to take the penalty kick Zane Wells knew exactly where he was going to try to place it; bottom right. Wells dove right on the kick getting a hand on the ball keeping it out of the goal to hold the lead.

The Toros outshot the Skyhawks 12-8 but were never able to find the back of the net. Wells was named Tournament MVP after making 6 saves in the match to Dickerson’s 2 saves. Purcell and Abdel Becerra each led the Hawks with 2 shots each.

Purcell, Settle, and Kyle Wood were each selected to the Tournament team along with the Toros Dickerson, Scott Mariano, and Greg Piechota.

#1 Fort Lewis College will take on Le Moyne (17-2-2) in the Semifinal game in Tampa on December 3rd. The winner of that game will advance to the Final game of the National Tournament on December 5th.
