BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The No. 2 Hobart soccer team was edged 1-0 by host Brockport State in a non-conference game played at Huntley Parker Field this afternoon. It is the first loss for the Statesmen (3-1-0) this season. Brockport improves to 4-0-1.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard early when senior Mike Breman took a free kick from the 30 yards out at nine minutes, 59 seconds. His shot skipped and took a funny hop into the far side of the goal.

Hobart had a few scoring opportunities in the first half. In the 25th minute, sophomore Will Abbott  fired a shot on net that senior Christian Tychostup blocked. Starting in the 30th minute, the Golden Eagles’ defense was peppered by a persistent Hobart attack. Sophomore Caetano Sanchez fired an 18-yard blast that struck the crossbar and was eventually cleared out of the defensive end. Three minutes later, off a corner kick, the Golden Eagles’ goalie, senior Joe Marino, punched out a shot by the Statesmen to deny another scoring opportunity.

In the second half, junior Evan Grey took a shot from 30 yards out that sailed high over the goal in the 49th minute. One minute later, Marino came out to make another save on a Will Abbott shot. Brockport held a 14-11 advantage in total shots. Hobart earned six corner kicks, while the Golden Eagles recorded three.

Mario finished with six saves in goal for Brockport. Junior Charlie Hale played all 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen, and turned aside seven shots.

Hobart will travel to St. John Fisher for another non-conference match-up on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
