Junior forward Winston Mattheisen (Norfolk, Va.) scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lift #2 seed Christopher Newport University to a 3-1 win over top-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan College in the title match of the 2010 USA South Mens Soccer Tournament. The tournament was played for the second straight year at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville.

N.C. Wesleyan (13-4-2) struck first when Mark Wielitzkas header deflected off CNU goalkeeper Justin Wolfe and Owen White was there to poke it in the fourth minute of the match.

The Captains came right back and scored on Mattheisens header off a Sean Moriarty cross at the 6:02 mark. The score remained 1-1 until Mattheisen headed another ball past NCW goalkeeper Ville Ture in the 70th minute for the eventual game-winner. Andrew Bonordon added an insurance goal in the 86th minute to put the match out of reach for the Bishops.

Wolfe made seven saves in 90 minutes for Christopher Newport (19-1-1), while Ture made three saves. N.C. Wesleyan out-shot CNU 13-12, but the Captains closed with a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. CNU had eight scoring opportunities nullified by offside calls, while the Bishops had seven.

With the win, Christopher Newport claims the USA Souths automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Captains also won last years USA South Tournament, topping N.C. Wesleyan in penalty kicks.
