DELAWARE, OHIO - The Lynchburg College men's soccer team scored its second upset in two days as the Hornets defeated second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament. LC beat #1 Trinity University Saturday by the same score.
The first half, although scoreless, saw a couple good scoring chances for each side. LC finished with 10 shots to the Bishops' 12. Hornet freshman keeper Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) made seven first-half saves.
The Hornets broke through at 50:27 when junior forward Kyle Symczak (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) collected a loose ball in traffic off of an LC corner and found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.
The Bishops had an outstanding scoring opportunity with just over 26 minutes left in the second half, but an open Jon Stegner flicked the ball over the net. LC added an insurance goal with just five ticks on the clock as junior Shane Spanninger (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) scored past the fallen keeper.
The Battling Bishops outshot LC 28-17 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Releford finished with 10 saves and Paul Hendricks made six stops for OWU (19-2-2).
Lynchburg (19-4-1) will face #6 Bowdoin College (ME) in the final four Friday, December 3. Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Messiah will square off in the other semifinal matchup. The Championship game is Saturday, Dec. 4.
