Akron’s home win streak snapped
No. 3 North Carolina tops No. 10 Boston College, clinches ACC
AKRON, Ohio -- A goal by senior Rubin Bega in the 86th minute gave Michigan State a 1-0 upset victory against No. 6 Akron on Wednesday, abruptly ending the Zips' 48-game home unbeaten streak dating back to 2007.
The Spartans even their season record at 7-7-4 (2-2-2 Big Ten), and are now 5-1-2 since Oct. 4. MSU struggled early in the season with consistency and finishing, thanks in large part to losing two All-Big Ten candidates before the season was two games old. In the last month, the Spartans have still struggled to create offense, but have been sound defensively and have gotten outstanding work from fifth-year senior keeper Jeremy Clark, who had six saves in recording his second consecutive shutout.
Bega's winner came with 3:27 remaining in regulation. A long ball came down into the offensive third from Adam Montague for the senior, who was able to split the defense and lofted a soft shot over the head of the charging goalkeeper and into the back of the net. It was his fourth goal of the season.
No. 3 North Carolina 2, No. 10 Boston College 0
NEWTON, Mass. -- No. 3 North Carolina used a pair of second-half goals to win the ACC regular season title for the third consecutive year on Wednesday with a 2-0 win at Boston College. Matt Hedges put the Tar Heels in front in the 61st minute before Billy Schuler put the match away with his 13th goal of the year in the 74th minute.
After scoreless first half that saw a 4-2 shot advantage in favor of the Tar Heels, Carolina used another second half scoring surge to claim its third consecutive win and run its league unbeaten streak to seven.
The Tar Heels were able to earn a free kick in the attacking third when Stefan Carter was issued a yellow card giving Carolina a dangerous free kick.
Enzo Martinez took the free kick from just outside the box and senior defender Matt Hedges was able to get a toe on the ball to deflect it into the back of the net to put Carolina in front 1-0 in the 61st minute. The goal was Hedges' fourth of the season and gave Martinez his team-leading eighth assist of the year.
