ST. LEO, Fla. -- Saint Leo (4-1) handed No. 8 Tampa (4-1-1) their first loss of the season Wednesday, beating the Spartans 3-0 at University Field.

In the 41st minute, Javeim Blanchette provided the first strike of the game when he gathered a ball from Josh Davis and snuck it past Tampa goal keeper David Neipel to give the Lions a 1-0 lead going into the half.

Just 15 minutes later, Saint Leo's Edgar Herrera received a beautiful through pass from Frank Bayabanen, beat one defender, and slipped the ball past Neipel to stretch the Lions' lead to 2-0.

Holding a 2-0 lead, the Saint Leo defense remained stifling. Some aggressive play from both teams warranted six yellow cards in a game that saw tensions rise as time continued to tick.

Nearing the 90th minute of play, Sean McFarlane, with his squad playing a man down, juked Neipel and gently kicked the ball into the back of the net to secure the win.

Tampa had 13 shots, five of which were on goal. Manuel Schoenhuber had five saves and improved his record to 3-0-1.
