No. 4 Simon Fraser takes down Mary, scores four goals in second half
BURNABY, B.C. -- Simon Fraser kept its winning streak alive Thursday as the Clan defeated the Mary Marauders 5-0 at home on Terry Fox Field.
The Clan scored early in the game when Michael Winter score his third goal of the season and gave the Clan a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
From there, the two sides played a defensive first half with the Clan outshooting Mary 2-0 and heading into the locker room at halftime with the 1-0 lead.
The Clan picked up their intensity in the second half as Carlo Basso scored his 10th of the season to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute. Then the floodgates opened as SFU scored a total of four goals in the second half.
“We struggled in the first half with our intensity, but we picked it up and set the standard for the second half," Basso said. "It was good to finish the game out strong."
Following up Basso's goal was Justin Wallace's, who converted the goal with a long strike after receiving the pass from Ryan Dhillon in the 65th minute.
Immediately after entering the game, Renan Rebelatto got on the scoresheet, taking advantage of a rebound from Mary's goalkeeper with a goal that gave the Clan a 4-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Rebelatto, which he scored in the 77th minute.
Moments later, Jovan Blagojevic sealed the win with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to give SFU a 5-0 lead, which held up as the final.
“We had a better week of practice; our intensity was much higher. The hard work all week helped us to be successful tonight,” Basso said.
Hide Ozawa earned his third shutout of the season in the match, helping the Clan improve to 11-1 and 7-1 in conference play.
