UC San Diego defeats Chico State, advances on penalty kicks

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- UC San Diego advanced to the next round of the NCAA tournament with a victory in penalty kicks against Chico State. After the game ended in regulation, the two overtime periods went scoreless before the teams headed to PKs.

John Cohen made three saves for the Tritons to give them the victory.

Matt Hurlow scored for Chico State and Gavin Lemming scored for UC San Diego in regulation to knot the game at one goal apiece.

Andisheh Bagheri, Brandon Bauman, Cory Wolfrom, Matthew McClure, and Malek Bashti all made their penalty kicks for UC San Diego. Matt Hurlow, Jake Ward, Jordan Gorman, and Tyson Crim all connected for Chico State.

The sides split their two regular-season meetings, each winning 1-0 on the opponent’s field. UCSD then edged Chico State, again by just a single goal 2-1 in overtime in the CCAA championship semifinals in Turlock on Friday, Nov. 8.
