Loyola (Md.) soccer great Koziol, two-time All-American, dies at 48

Stan 'Stas' Koziol
BALTIMORE -- Stan 'Stas' Koziol, who graduated from Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland) as the all-time leader in assists, passed away Monday after a brief illness with leukemia.

Koziol, 48, was a two-time All-American for the Greyhounds, earning second team honors in 1986 and '87. He finished his Loyola career with 19 goals and 29 assists from 1983-87. His assist total still stands as a school standard, having been matched but not passed by Marc Harrison (1992-95) and Phil Bannister (2007-10).

Following the conclusion of his Loyola career, Koziol embarked on a professional career that led him to play outdoors for the Maryland Bays of the American Soccer League, briefly with the MetroStars of Major League Soccer and the Central Jersey Riptide of the USL D3. He competed indoors for the Baltimore Blast of Major Indoor Soccer League.

Koziol, whose younger brother Joe was also a standout at Loyola, competed for the Puerto Rican National Team during the CONCACAF qualification matches for the 1994 World Cup.

In an interview with the Clifton (N.J.) Journal, former Loyola soccer coach Bill Sento said, "His work ethic was unmatched. On the field, Stas was a leader from the first day of practice and it matched his tactical technical abilities. He never gave an inch and when he sustained a knee injury and forced to redshirt one season, he rehabbed with the same passion and came back better than ever. I consider Stas one of Loyola's best players, but even more a better person and friend."

Sento will be inducted to the Greyhounds Hall of Fame in May.
