ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Pol Sole's goal in the 49th minute proved to be the game-winner as Winthrop extended its winning streak to five games with a 3-2 victory against Longwood Saturday evening in Big South Conference action.
Winthrop improved to 8-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Big South while Longwood falls to 1-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. The game wraps up six consecutive home games for the Eagles.
"We are pleased to get the three points tonight," said Winthrop head coach Rich Posipanko. "Longwood is much better than their record indicates. However, I feel we made the game closer by not finishing our chances. Our finishing was below par tonight and inability to clear the ball put us in a bit of trouble tonight."
Guilherme Avelar made one save to improve his record to 3-1 on the year as the Eagles finished with a 17-10 edge in shots. Carlos Canas finished with six saves.
