EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State upset defending Big Ten tournament champions No. 2 Indiana in a 3-2 victory to close out the regular season. MSU heads to the Big Ten Tournament with a record of 10-4-4 and 4-2-2 record in the Big Ten.
"It was a great college game tonight," head coach Damon Rensing said. "Two top-20 teams in the country were very entertaining. You have to give our guys a lot of credit. I thought we came out, scored the first goal on a great shot from Kenny, deflected in."
Michigan State had a few chances before scoring in the 30th minute. Sophomore Dewey Lewis passed it back for freshman midfielder Ken Krolicki to score his first goal of the season from 25 yards out. The Spartans totaled five shots and two saves at the end of the half, leading 1-0 after 45 minutes.
Indiana answered with a goal in the 48th minute from Andrew Oliver to start the half. MSU took back the lead scoring in the 55th minute as Krolicki netted his second goal of the game and the season. Krolicki got possession of the ball in the box and scored around a defender from 12 yards out.
"We came out in the second half with good aggression, another great goal by Kenny to put us up 2-1," Rensing said. "I thought we were a little unfortunate on the own goal to give it up on a corner kick. It was great to see Adam come through shortly after and get that third game winner."
On a corner kick from Indiana's Tanner Thompson in the 80th minute, Indiana tied the game at 2-2 with an own goal from Michigan State. Three minutes later, senior forward Adam Montague scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans. Jay Chapman set up Montague for a header to close the game at 3-2.
Michigan State closes the regular season undefeated against ranked teams in 2014, posting a 2-0-3 record in those matches.
"We are very proud of our guys, not just the effort but how we played and handled this tough environment," Rensing said. "It's a great way to end the season at the No. 2 team in the country and get ready for the Big Ten Tournament."
The Spartans will compete for the title of Big Ten tournament champions starting this weekend with matches played on Saturday and Sunday.
