No. 3 Washington 5, San Diego State 3
SEATTLE -- No. 3 Washington (10-0-3, 3-0-1 Pac-12) stayed unbeaten, rolling San Diego State (3-7-1, 1-4-1 Pac-12) 5-3 on Friday afternoon at the Husky Soccer Stadium. Darwin Jones and Cristian Roldan each scored twice as the Dawgs matched their best offensive output of the season.
Washington wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a goal in the sixth minute. After a foul in the attacking third, James Moberg sent a perfect bending ball to the back post where Roldan timed him jump and buried a header. It was a team-leading seventh assist for Moberg who was playing left midfield for the first time this season. Roldan scored for a second conseuctive game where he has used his head to find the back of the net.
San Diego State equalized in the ninth minute on a header of their own. John Pegg sent a ball into the box that Jordan Ongaro finished from point-blank range, leaving little chance for Ryan Herman to make a save.
The Dawgs retook the lead in the 28th minute with a Jonesâ first goal. The Aztecs turned the ball over in their defensive third and Josh Heard took advantage. He controlled the ball and played Jones who calmly dribbled wide and beat the goalkeeper with a left-footed shot.
Jones would widen the lead eight minutes later with his second goal of the game. Jones dribbled at the keeper and once he committed shot in the corner to give the Dawgs a 3-1 lead.
Washington took the two-goal lead to the half, outshooting the Aztecs, 12-6. Washington also took five corners in the half and was dangerous on each, although none resulted in goals.
After the break, Washington clung to the two-goal lead for 20 minutes until the Aztecs made it a game in the 76th minute. Ongaro finished his second goal of the game on a one-timer to bring San Diego State within one.
The tight moments were brief, however, as Roldan scored again to widen the Husky margin back to two. Roldan gained possession on a restart, dribbled to his left and shot low and in the corner to beat the Aztec goalkeeper.
Roldan wasnât done, adding a second assist to go with his two goals for a six-point afternoon. This time Roldan slipped a ball to Heard on the left side and he dribbled toward the goalkeeper for a one-on-one opportunity. Heard calmly finished his fourth goal of the year to make it 5-2.
The Aztecs would add the gameâs eighth goal just 20 seconds later for a final of 5-3. It was the first time this season that Washington allowed more than one goal.
No. 5 UCLA 1, Oregon State 1
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Freshman Gage Zerboni scored his first collegiate goal with just under two minutes to play in regulation as the fifth-ranked UCLA earned a 1-1 draw with the Oregon State Beavers.
In the 73rd minute, Oregon State took the lead when Devonte Small stole the ball from junior Leo Stolz and sent a long ball to Chance Bergen, who broke away from the UCLA defense before beating Edwards to the far post for a goal.
The Bruins continued to push forward and had two great opportunities off of set pieces in the 80th and 82nd minutes. The first chance came when Munoz swung the ball into the box to Vale, who got a touch on it but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Then two minutes later, Munoz sent another great ball into the box to a wide open Chavez, who slid but sent his shot high, keeping the match at 1-0 in Oregon State's favor.
Things looked bleak for the Bruins, but as has been the case for the past few weeks, UCLA found another clutch goal in the waning minutes to tie the match at 1-1. This time the goal would come from Zerboni, who gathered the ball after a scramble in the box and buried a shot far post to level the match and send it into overtime, where no one was able to score.
