Lewis scores season-high in goals, wins 5-0

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- No. 5 Lewis scored a season-high five goals, led by a tally and two assists by freshman midfielder Alexandro Ayala, en route to the 5-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory against William Jewell at Lewis Stadium on Sunday.

The Flyers' previous season-high came in a 4-0 win against Maryville on Sept. 27. It is also the most goals scored by a Lewis squad since a 7-0 whitewash of Kentucky Wesleyan in 2011.

"We came out and played well," Lewis head coach Evan Fiffles said. "In the second half, we obviously finished our opportunities.

"It was a good 90 minutes, which is exactly what we needed."

With the win, Lewis improved to 9-1-4 on the campaign and 8-1-3 in GLVC action, while the Cardinals dropped to 5-10 on the season and 3-9 in conference play.

Lewis also received tallies from junior defender Michael Pyle, junior forward George Thomson, senior forward Cristhian Ramirez and sophomore forward Robert Zieba. Flyer sophomore midfielder Luke Comerouski pitched in two assists.

Lewis goalkeepers Alec Pickett and Omar Ramirez made a total of five saves to preserve the Flyers' eighth shutout of the season. Ramirez made three saves, while Pickett stopped two Cardinal shots.

William Jewell netminder Shane Van Hooser made seven stops for the Cardinals.

As a team, Lewis outshot William Jewell 26-15, including a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal.
