WATERBURY, Conn. -- Senior Joe Baccielo scored in the 87th minute to lead No. 15 Post against No. 1 LIU-Post 1-0 at LaMoy Field on Wednesday afternoon. It is the first time any team at Post has defeated the top-ranked team in the country.
Baccielo received the ball at midfield with two defenders in front of him. He dribbled by one Pioneers defender and kicked it passed the other. The senior got the ball on the other side and launched it to the lower right side just past Pioneers goalkeeper Marco Jorgensen for game-winning score.
Both teams battled all game and the shot totals were 16-14 in favor of the Eagles. LIU-Post (14-1) had two chances midway through the opening half, but senior Andre Lindsay stopped both attempts.
Sophomore Francisco Sastre nearly put the Eagles (12-1-1) ahead in the 67th minute with a diving header off a long pass from senior Jean Louis Cadet that went just wide.
Lindsay came up big in the second-half with six of his season-high eight saves en route to his eighth shutout of the year. His biggest stop came in the 81st minute as the nation's leading scorer, Eivind Austboe, took a shot to the left side of the goal. Lindsay dove far to the left side and knocked it away.
Post has now defeated two top-10 teams this season as it opened the year with a 1-0 victory against No. 7 Southern New Hampshire. The Eagles boast the third-ranked defense in the country. It was the first time the Pioneers' top-ranked offense has been shutout in the regular season since 2011.
No. 2 Rollins 5, Palm Beach Atlantic 0
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Rollins (14-0-0) scored four goals in the second half on Wednesday afternoon to defeat No. 21 Palm Beach Atlantic (7-2-1) on the road 5-0.
Tucker Hume scored twice while Rob Crowley, Alex Bisbee and Rafa Faria each added a score apiece. Faria also had a pair of assists with Brett Durrance, Tosan Popo and Grant Blackhurst each registering one.
Keneil Baker posted his fifth clean sheet of the season in goal, recording a pair of saves in 90 minutes. The senior now has 27 career shutouts, most in program history.
Austin Spagnola also played the full game in goal for the Sailfish, allowing the five scores and collected 11 saves.
The Tars outshot PBA 22-6 and took 10 corners compared to the Sailfish’s five.
The Tars have now won 22 consecutive regular season games dating back to last season.
No. 3 Young Harris 2, Lander 1
GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Ilija Ilic and Niall McCabe teamed up to lead No. 3-ranked Young Harris past Lander 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference match Wednesday.
The Mountain Lions improved to 12-1-0 overall and to into first place in the conference at 6-0-0 with their 10th consecutive win. Lander fell to 8-3-1 and 4-3-0. Young Harris opens a three-game homestand to end the regular season.
Lander jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:40 mark when Clement Dauchy netted his 11th goal of the season and was assisted by Brett Jankouskas.
Ilic, who is second in Peach Belt in goals (15) and is tied for the lead in points scored (34), tied the match at 1 when he headed in a shot off an assist from Niall McCabe at with 2:30 remaining before halftime. Ilic and McCabe teamed up again for the winning score, another shot in front of the goal, at the 60:57 mark. McCabe leads the league with 13 assists.
Young Harris outshot Lander 13-12 while Lander led in corner kicks 6-4. Both goalkeepers, Lander's Barrett Nielsen and YHC's Pedro Ozi, had four saves.
No. 5 Lindenwood 1, Truman State 0
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The No. 5 Lions continued their undefeated season on Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 win against Truman State in Kirksville, Mo.
Lindenwood got on the scoreboard first in the 14th minute. Guillermo Tabuyo scored his first goal of the season after a pass from Ithiel Vale.
The Lions defense was suffocating all afternoon. Truman only mustered three shots on goal the whole contest and Alex Tiesenhausen recorded his second consecutive shutout.
Lindenwood improved its overall record to 13-0-1 after the win.
