No. 23 Virginia 2, No. 2 Notre Dame 0
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Virginia's Darius Madison scored three minutes before halftime and again two minutes into the second half to give the No. 23 Cavaliers a 2-0 win against No. 2 Notre Dame in ACC action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
It was the first setback of the season for Notre Dame (8-1-5, 5-1-3) and the Irish currently reside in second place in the ACC standings, just one point behind leader Wake Forest. The Fighting Irish will square off against the 14th-ranked Demon Deacons on Nov. 2.
Virginia (7-3-4, 3-2-4) held the edge in shots (8-7) and corner kicks (4-2). Cavalier goalkeeper Jeff Gal stopped three Irish shots, while Notre Dame senior Patrick Wall had two saves. The victory upped Virginia's unbeaten streak to 10 games.
UC Irvine 1, No. 5 Cal State Northridge 0
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- UC Irvine kept its Big West South run going with a big-time win against the fifth-ranked Cal State Northridge 1-0 on Saturday night at Matador Soccer Feld.
Mitchell Alvarez took advantage of a broken play in the 10th minute to get the scoring going. Mats Bjurman chipped a shot off the crossbar, and the rebound was pounced on by Alvarez who buried it and gave UCI the early 1-0 lead and eventually the game winner.
The 'Eaters moved into a tie with the Matadors atop the Big West South division with a record of 4-2-1. The win against the fifth-ranked Matadors also marks the fourth consecutive ranked opponent UCI has defeated. The 'Eaters downed a 21st-ranked Matador squad to end 2012 and took down No. 16 Louisville and No. 11 UCLA earlier in 2013.
Alvarez's goal was his second game winner in as many matches and his third goal of the season. Bjurman provided his third assist.
Keeper Michael Breslin stopped three shots in recording his Big West-leading seventh shutout of the year.
No. 6 Louisville 2, Memphis 1
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Junior Nolan Moore connected for the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to lift No. 6 Louisville to a 2-1 road win against Memphis on Saturday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
With their fifth road victory of the season, the Cardinals improved to 10-3-2 overall and remained in sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference standings with 16 points and a 5-1-1 record. Memphis dropped to 9-7-1 overall and 3-5-0 in conference matches.
Overall, Louisville finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 7-2 cushion in corner kicks. Memphis was whistled for eight fouls, while the Cardinals were called for four. Having played in goal for every minute this season, junior goalkeeper Joachim Ball had four saves in the win, while Cody Uzcategui had four stops in the loss.
No. 7 UMBC 0, Binghamton 0, 2 OT
VESTAL, N.Y. -- The seventh-ranked Retrievers extended their unbeaten streak to five, but could not dent the Binghamton net and the two America East squads played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw at the BU Sports Complex.
UMBC set a school record by extending its road unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games (6-0-3) dating back to 2012. The Retrievers are now 12-1-2 on the season and 3-0-2 in America East play, while Binghamton is 3-8-5, 1-1-3.
The Retrievers outshot the Bearcats 16-6 and played most of the final 65 minutes in Binghamton territory.
Retriever netminder Phil Saunders recorded his second consecutive shutout and the 21st of his career. He made a pair of saves, both in the first half.
No. 9 Georgetown 1, No. 16 Marquette 0, OT
MILWAUKEE -- Senior defender Ted Helfrich's first career goal was an important one as his score in the 94th minute led No. 9 Georgetown past No. 16 Marquette (9-4-2, 5-1-1 Big East), 1-0, in overtime at Valley Fields. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 12-3-1 and 5-1-1 in Big East play.
The game was scoreless at the end of regulation forcing GU's fourth overtime contest of the season.
Marquette opened overtime with two shots, both missing the target. As the Hoyas brought the team forward, Steve Neumann's corner went to the far post to the head of Helfrich who headed it across the goal and back in for the golden goal and the 1-0 victory handing MU its first conference loss of the season.
Marquette outshot the Hoyas 17-13, but Georgetown took six corners to MU's two. Both keepers tallied five saves and Tomas Gomez took the win.
The shutout made history for Georgetown as it gave GU 11 shutouts on the year breaking the program record. Gomez also took over the top spots in both career shutouts (23) and season shutouts (9).
