MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The second seeded Spartans of the University of Tampa (13-4-1) defeated number three seed Harding (15-4-1) 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA Womens Soccer South Region Tournament at Buccaneer Field on Thursday evening.
Tampa took an early 3-0 lead after rattling off three goals in the first 18 minutes of play. The Spartans landed their first blow when senior Katie Calvin (Clearwater, Fla.) converted a feed from sophomore Samantha Robinson (Dunedin, Fla.) at 9:28 for her seventh goal of the season.
Senior Catherine Moore (Jackson, Miss.) increased the deficit to 2-0 when she netted her first goal of the season on a pass from freshman Katie Callahan (Houston, Texas) at 14:22. The third Tampa goal came less than three minutes later from Calvin who delivered her second score of the game to the near post on a cross from Melanie Moody (Orlando, Fla.) at 17:25.
Tampa went up 4-0 when sophomore forward Katie Levine (Margate, Fla.) notched the Spartans fourth goal at 37:02, driving home an open netter after a shot by Robinson slipped past Harding goalkeeper Cheryl Dovichak (Tilley, B.C., Can.).
The Lady Bison came to life in the second half, cutting Tampas lead to 4-1 when freshman Kendyl Washburn (Midland, Texas) out-ran two defenders at 50:10 to notch her 13th goal of the season, tying Hardings single-season record.
The Spartans held the edge in shots 25 to seven and in corner kicks six to one. Tampa goalkeeper, freshman Shannon Aiken (Land OLakes, Fla.) picked up the win after recording three saves to move to 7-3-0 on the season. She was relieved with nine minutes remaining by sophomore Laurenleigh Guagliardo (Tampa, Fla.) who stepped in to make one save. Despite recording 12 saves, Dovichak picked up the loss for Harding, dropping her to 14-3-1.
Tampa advances to the second round of the South Region Tournament at Buccaneer Field on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. The Spartans opponent will be the winner of the match between number one seed Barry and number four seed Lincoln Memorial.
