Nov. 10, 2005

SEATTLE - Sarah Martinez broke through for the game-winning goal with less than 3 minutes left in the second overtime, lifting No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific University over Chico State 1-0 in an NCAA Division II first round women¹s soccer game Thursday night at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (18-0-3) will play No. 13 UC San Diego in Saturday afternoon¹s regional championship game. The Wildcats finished 14-4-3, eliminated by SPU in the first round for the second year in a row.

Although Seattle Pacific dominated play and amassed a 22-6 margin in shots, the game seemed headed for a penalty kick shootout until Martinez broke free at 107:08.

Running onto a pass from Allison Teague (Sr., Redmond, Wa./Bellevue Christian) on the left flank, Martinez (So., Bothell, Wa./Cedar Park Christian) broke into the box and, with a defender draped on her right side, fired a left-footed shot into the left corner.

Earlier, Martinez had missed an open net in the final stages of regulation and she had a goal called back for offside to open the second overtime. It was her 14th goal of the season and the seventh in the last six games.

Jennifer Burns (Fr., Boise, Id.) made two easy saves to earn her sixth shutout.

The Falcons increased their pressure during the final 11 minutes of regulation. First came a miss byMartinez with Chico State keeper Kari Gonzalez rushing off her line. In a hectic scramble during the 88th minute, Samantha Hufford cracked a 25-yard shot off the crossbar and Jacobson¹s backheel was saved by Gonzalez.

SPU was the first-half aggressor, finishing with an 8-1 advantage in shots and 6-2 in corners. However, the best scoring opportunity occurred when Gonzalez misplayed a bouncing 50-yard drive from Katie Taylor and nearly bobbled it into the net.

Three minutes earlier, in the 39th minute, Jessica Gerstmann put Tricia Loomis through into the box but her 10-yard shot sailed wide of the upper left post.
