Cal Notches 2-1 OT Win Over Auburn To Advance To Second Round

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior forward Lisa Kevorkian netted a golden goal to propel to the California women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Auburn on Friday evening in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Florida State's Seminole Soccer Complex. The Golden Bears (11-8-1) will take on No. 1-seed Florida State on Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. PST in the second round of the tournament.
Alex Morgan scored Cal's first goal of the game in the 33rd minute. After the Bears had taken five shots in the first seven minutes of overtime, Kevorkian put away the goal and game off a cross from Morgan from five yards. The score was Kevorkian's fifth game-winning goal and her eighth goal overall this season.
In the first four minutes of play in the game, senior keeper Gina Pellegrini handily made two saves when Auburn's Chelsea Yauch and Katy Frierson took a shot apiece. Lisa Kevorkian and Alex Morgan took the first shots for the Bears - Kevorkian's at 11:25 and Morgan's at 13:28 - both of which were saved by Tiger goalie Amy Howard.
Emily Shibata did her part to keep Howard on her toes with a shot in the 18th minute that Howard saved. Following Shibata's attack, the Bears peppered off four shots before one found the back of the net.
Morgan scored at 32:23 for her 14th goal of the season with a shot to the inside left post to give Cal an early 1-0 lead.
Auburn took two shots and Cal had one before the close of the first half to send the Bears into the break with the 1-0 advantage.
In the first six minutes of the second half, the teams each took a shot that went wide with Cal's coming from Katie Benz.
Auburn made things interesting with a game-tying goal at 58:30 when she scored her first goal of the season off a corner with a boot that bent the ball to the inside far post. Morgan made Howard dive for a save in the 69th minute with a shot on goal. Pellegrini made two second-half stops for the Bears.
In the second half, Cal took seven shots and Auburn had six, but neither team scored a gamewinner in regulation to send the first-round game into overtime.
Kevorkian had the first action of the first overtime period with a shot that went wide at 92:01. Morgan followed suit with a shot 1:31 later that the Tiger defense blocked and senior Katie Oakes had a wide shot 14 seconds later later. Less than a minute following Oakes' shot, Kevorkian fired off another one that went wide and Morgan followed up with a shot that Howard had to save.
Just over two minutes later, Kevorkian's scored off a cross from Morgan at 97:03 for her fifth gamewinner of the season.
Cal outshot Auburn, 22-12, including a 6-0 outshooting in overtime. Pellegrini had five saves while the Tigers' Howard had six. Morgan paced the Bears with 10 shots, five of which were on goal, while Kevorkian had five all together and two on goal.
Cal will take on No. 1-seeded and host Florida State on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. PST in Tallahassee. Florida State defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 4-1, on Nov. 13 to advance to the second round.
