GENEVA, N.Y. - The 15th-ranked Ithaca College women's soccer team defeated Muhlenberg 1-0 this afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bombers improve to 15-4-1 overall and earn a spot in the second round match vs. sixth-ranked William Smith tomorrow, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. The Mules wrap their season with a 12-7-0 record.

Ithaca's winning goal was scored by senior midfielder Amy Scheffer (Schalmont/Schenectady, N.Y.) in the 79th minute. The play began with pressure by first-year forward Rachael Palladino (Lansing/Groton, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Emily Mogk (Bozeman/Bozeman, Mont.), who forced a turnover by the Muhlenberg defense and sent Palladino in alone on net. Palladino's shot was saved by Muhlenberg goalkeeper, sophomore Michele Toher (Mahwah, N.J.), but the rebound fell to Scheffer at the top of the penalty area. She carried the ball toward the goal, taking a low shot from 8 yards was stopped by the defense, but she pursued the rebound near the goal line and forced it over the line.

Muhlenberg's best scoring opportunity came in the 36th minute, as Meghan O'Grady beat a Bomber defender and got loose for a one-on-one shot with Ithaca goalie Jessica Platt. Platt came out to challenge and got there just in time to make a diving stop on O'Grady's shot, which was headed toward an open net.

Platt finished with three saves for the Bombers, while Toher collected seven stops for the Mules.

Ithaca held an 18-4 advantage in shots, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
