ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Vicki Bieschke (Oconomowoc) headed a Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids) pass to the back of the net at the 52:55 mark, giving the Pointers the eventual 1-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women’s soccer tournament, defeating the University of St. Thomas. The Pointers advance to play Augustana for the right to advance to the Sweet 16.
The win for the Pointers avenges a loss to the Tommies during the regular season, a 1-0 loss in St. Paul, MN.
After a scoreless first half, the Pointers broke through the Tommie defense as Bieschke tallied her 10th goal of the season, giving the Pointers the edge.
Liz Hunter (Stevens Point) tallied recorded six saves in the shutout victory for the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point (16-3-1) advances to play host Augustana Sunday evening at 6 p.m. in Rock Island.
