BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team defeated Eastern, 2-1, in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Jessica Hnatiuk (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll School) and Erin Stafford (Doylestown, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) each had a goal in the contest. The Blue Jays advance to the Sectionals for the second consecutive year. Hopkins improves to 18-3 on the season while Eastern finishes its season at 11-8-2.

The Blue Jays got on the board early on a direct kick by Hnatiuk just 7:10 into the first half. Hnatiuk drilled a shot to the far post that went through the hands of Eastern goalie Alysia Goodman's hands as she stretched above her head. The goal was Hnatiuk's fifth of the season. This would be the only goal scored in the first half.

Stafford scored her eighth goal of the season in the 67th minute. Erica Suter (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) passed the ball from right to left across the goal for Stafford who buried it into the upper left corner of the goal. This goal would eventually turn into the game-winner, Stafford's fourth of the season.

Eastern gave Hopkins a scare by scoring at 87:33, making it a one-goal game. Tess Beckwith slipped the ball past a diving Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) and off the left post into the goal. Jillian DiRenzo assisted on the goal. The goal broke a Hopkins six-game shutout streak. The last goal the Blue Jays allowed was in a 2-0 loss to Muhlenberg.

The Blue Jays will play in the Sweet 16 for the second time in two years when they play in the NCAA Sectionals on November 20-22. Stay tuned to for the specific details about the games.
